CIM 115 Class Reflections
Week 1
CIM 115.1 Milestone 1
Looking into game changers. I don’t know if the term game changer is defined enough. Where do I draw the line between something setting a precedent or being a “game changer”. Personally I measure game changers in terms of relative success. While some companies may have done something “first” that does not make it the source of changing the landscape. For example, the internet existed for the longest time as a medium only accessible to the tech savvy “nerds” until the first dial up routers became accessible to the public. From there the internet exploded into what it is today. So the internet may have existed, but it did not change how we consume media until it was successfully made available to the general populace via dial up modem/routers and later broadband.
We are to look into game changers of the past for my first assignment. Currently I’m looking at:-
- Valve (in particulatar Steam)
- Spotify
- Chromecast (successor of MiraCast)
The lecture intoduced steaming services and their rise over pay per view services or hard copies.
Going forward I’m looking to break down how valve and it’s infrastructure affected the rest of the industry and led the way for all other remote/streaming/internet based platforms.
Week 2
CIM 115.1 Milestone 2
Unfortunately I didn’t make class this week (I didn’t have my access card yet… doh).
However in my own time I’ve made some progress on my past game changer “Steam”. I’ve alway though the soft skills I’ve picked up in my retail work (5 yrs Maccas, 1 yr restraunt/cafe/function centre and 3 yrs Coles) would help me in my future career in Audio. It’s encouraging to see people like Gabe Newell employ some similar queues that I use at work with people (he also collects knives).
The pre-class work for this week was focused on participatory culture which I think has grown even more with services like Twitch allowing viewers to interact directly with the “show” or presenter via live chat and overlay plugins like super-chat and subscriber chat.
With the assessment just around the corner
